These courses, each with its unique focus and approach, aim to provide students with enriching language skills beyond the traditional classroom setting and allow students to be creative, expressive, and practical in English while immersing themselves in diverse cultures.
Western Culture
Western Culture is a captivating journey into the heart of the English-speaking world and beyond. Led by experienced instructor Jacob McGee, this course promises an engaging exploration of the contributions, cultures, and people of countries within the English-speaking sphere, with a particular focus on the United States. However, the class will also delve into the diverse tapestry of non-English-speaking Europe. Through interactive discussions, presentations, and multimedia content, students will gain insights into the rich heritage and geography of these regions. Participation is encouraged, and mistakes are welcomed as part of the learning process, ensuring a relaxed and supportive learning environment.
Controversial 'Hot Takes'
Embark on a thought-provoking journey with Controversial "Hot Takes" led by IMAS student Stephen Fletes. This course challenges conventional perspectives on controversial topics, from historical events to contemporary cultural issues. Students will hone their English language skills through spirited debates and presentations, fostering both linguistic fluency and open-mindedness. With no grades given, the focus is to speak up and have fun throughout.
Skate or Die? An Introduction to Skateboarding
Dive into the dynamic world of skateboarding with Skate or Die? An Introduction to Skateboarding, guided by PhD candidate Andrew Tim-An Yi. This innovative course offers a unique fusion of English language learning and skateboarding culture exploration. Through a blend of multimedia resources and hands-on skateboarding sessions, students will not only enhance their language proficiency but also gain insights into the history and global impact of skateboarding. Whether you're a novice or a seasoned skater, this course promises an unforgettable learning experience.
Public Speaking and Critical Discussion
Elevate your communication skills with Public Speaking and Critical Discussion, led by instructor Natcha Lee. This comprehensive course empowers students to express themselves confidently and persuasively in both public speaking engagements and critical discussions. Through structured assignments and interactive sessions, students will refine their speaking abilities, enhance their critical thinking skills, and gain the confidence to articulate ideas effectively across various contexts.
What is the instructor's point of view?
In an exclusive interview, Natcha Lee and Jacob McGee shared insights into their roles as instructors, each bringing unique perspectives and motivations to their classes.
Lee, a third-year student at IMAS with a mixed Taiwanese-Thai background, hosts the English Public Speaking and Critical Discussion class. Her passion for guiding students stems from her belief that fluency in English is attainable through dedication and practice. Lee fosters a supportive environment, encouraging students to express themselves confidently without fear of embarrassment. Her innovative approach is active engagement in gossip discussions to keep students interested and motivated. 'I believe, (gossip) is an essential communication skill, and it's something that resonates with students in my class,' said Lee.
On the other hand, instructor McGee, a first-year IMAS student from Louisville, Kentucky, teaches the Western Culture class. With a diverse teaching background, McGee aims to instill a deeper appreciation and understanding of Western civilization in his students. Through engaging discussions, multimedia resources, and student presentations, McGee ensures active participation and a stimulating learning environment. Reflecting on his teaching journey, McGee values incorporating student feedback to refine and expand the course curriculum continually.
