National Chengchi University Bilingual and Multicultural Promotion Office

Vision

Starting from the 2023 academic year, National Chengchi University (NCCU) has become a Key Cultivation University for the Ministry of Education's (MOE) bilingual program. Funding from the MOE has allowed the university to enhance students' English proficiency through various initiatives and cultivate talents with international perspectives.

Internationalization in fact was initiated in NCCU as early as 20 years ago. By setting English as the standard and leveraging other 26 languages offered in the Foreign Language Center, students will gain a more holistic understanding of internationalization, that it is not only limited within the English-speaking world, but also involves other foreign nations and cultures.

"English is like currency, a medium for our transactions and communications.” In addition to enhancing local students' English proficiency through the bilingual program, English-taught programs also attract international students unfamiliar with Mandarin to study at NCCU, creating even more opportunities for local students to interact with international students, allowing a deeper understanding of other countries' political, economic and social culture.

The funding from the Ministry of Education's (MOE) Key Cultivation University initiative has enabled National Chengchi University (NCCU) to reassess and integrate the resources needed for internationalization, teaching empowerment and learning support. Simultaneously, the Bilingual Education and Multicultural Promotion Committee was established to guide the Bilingual Education and Multicultural Promotion Office in planning and implementing relevant bilingual policies.

The existing English Writing Center has also been transformed into the EMI Resource Center. In addition to training students in English writing skills, it provides consultation and training for EMI teachers and teaching assistants. The goal is to enhance the quality of English instruction on campus and to cultivate more EMI teachers for the nation's future.

Amidst the opportunities and challenges brought by globalization, in addition to cultivating globally competitive talents, NCCU also emphasizes the integration and promotion of multiculturalism. The aim is to nurture global citizens who embrace multiculturalism, respect differences, and become critical forces in promoting human progress and prosperity.

With such vision and determination, NCCU is committed to:

01Building a diverse educational ecosystem and implementing NCCU International Village

Implementing EMI with other multilingual and multicultural courses while paying attention to the building of a diverse campus educational ecosystem.

Establishing the Bilingual Education and Multicultural Promotion Office, dedicated to integrating different resources from various departments in NCCU.

Adopting a comprehensive curriculum strategy that starts from general English proficiency improvement to professional English training, such as English for General Purposes (EGP) which assists the overall college-level learning experience; English for Academic Purposes (EAP) which caters to improvement in academic writing, reading listening and speaking skills; English for Specific Purposes (ESP) which focuses on English for specific fields such as business management, communication, social sciences, science and technology.

Integrating NCCU campus with the surrounding community to become an NCCU International Village, providing students with a variety of bilingual learning resources for both individual and group learning, thus helps increase daily cross-cultural exchanges between domestic and overseas students.

02Continuing to expand the scale of international cooperation, support faculty and students to engage in international mobility and nurture global citizens

By expanding teaching, research, and industry collaborations to a global level, as well as mobilizing seed funding and scholarship resources, we aim to enhance the availability, affordability and accessibility of international mobility programs for faculty and students.
